GAP Group Launches Nationwide Recycling to Address Construction Waste

GAP Group North East launched a UK-wide insulation panel recycling service on February 9, 2026. The initiative targets a hidden environmental problem: the disposal of insulation panels in construction. These materials, once removed from buildings, often end up in landfills or low-grade incineration. The construction sector generates 62% of UK waste, with a third sent to landfills, according to national data.

Insulation’s Hidden Environmental Toll

Insulation panels, essential for reducing building energy use, become problematic at the end of their life. Foam-cored and composite panels are frequently discarded in mixed skips, leading to long-term pollution. Older panels may contain ozone-depleting substances or high-global-warming-potential gases. These materials, if improperly handled, release harmful gases or break down into microplastics.

Landfilling or burning these panels creates lasting environmental risks. Plastic-foam cores like EPS do not biodegrade and contribute to the plastic pollution crisis. Regulations require capturing these gases during disposal, not allowing them to escape into the atmosphere.

A New Recycling Path

GAP Group’s service provides a direct route for end-of-life insulation panels to specialized processors. Panels collected across the UK are handled at facilities in Gateshead and Perth. The process separates metal skins and insulation cores, recovers recyclable materials, and safely manages hazardous components under strict environmental controls.

“Disposing of insulation panels swaps one environmental problem for another,” said Peter Moody, CEO of GAP Group North East. By using the same regulated systems as fridge recycling, the company captures blowing agents, recovers metals, and reduces landfill burdens. This approach cuts embodied carbon and supports ESG goals for construction projects.

The service achieves several outcomes:

    • Recycling metal facings reduces reliance on virgin metal production.
    • Treating foam cores and blowing agents aligns with climate and ozone regulations.
    • Providing an audit trail helps contractors demonstrate responsible waste management.

GAP Group’s offering is part of a broader range of recycling services, including fridges, batteries, and electronic waste. The company aims to help construction and facilities management clients meet stricter landfill reduction targets, which have dropped from 13% to 1% of total waste.

Founded in the North East, GAP Group operates nationwide with facilities in Gateshead and Perth. It offers fast collections, detailed reporting, and ESG support. The new insulation recycling service highlights a growing need to address “forgotten” waste streams in the construction sector.

Environmental risks from improper disposal remain significant. Legacy insulation panels, if not handled properly, can release pollutants over centuries. GAP Group’s approach ensures these materials are processed safely, reducing long-term harm to ecosystems and public health.

The company’s focus on compliance and transparency positions it as a key player in the evolving waste management setting. By tackling a previously overlooked issue, GAP Group North East aims to set a new standard for recycling in construction.
