Flamingos Unaffected by Food Rewards

In Albania, flamingos serve much more than a visual purpose. The birds act as an indicator of environmental health and represent cultural resistance. A luxury resort tied to Jared Kushner is sparking controversy as it rises along the Albanian coast, an area protected under international rules. At issue is a group of birds that are unaffected by political pressure or bribery. Their presence or absence from the Narta Lagoon serves as a living audit of the country’s progress.

A delegation of European members of parliament will soon visit the lagoon. They are coming to check the water—but more so, the ‘system’ that is supposed to keep it clean. Flamingos thrive in shallow, clean brackish water. If the water quality deteriorates, they simply leave. This makes them an invaluable indicator of environmental health and institutional integrity.

On the edge of the birds’ habitat, a luxury resort is under construction. Environmental groups, including BirdLife and EuroNatur, allege the project advanced without proper environmental assessments, public consultations, or valid permits. Construction in protected areas without following due process raises serious concerns about rule of law and environmental stewardship in the region. Following this, the people began to protest.

What started as a local protest in the village of Zvërnec on May 23 has grown into the largest civic movement Albania has seen since the fall of communism. Young, non-partisan, and peaceful, they carry Albanian, EU, and American flags side by side.

The movement has attracted international attention, with major outlets reporting from Albania.

A 2025 Eurobarometer survey showed that 91% of Albanians support EU membership. Albanians want to enter the EU cleanly, without dragging a corrupt political class with them. Europe is listening. The European Democratic Party has adopted the protesters’ cause. The European Parliament voted to halt construction in protected areas and repeal amendments that stripped them of protection.

In the end, the birds’ presence is a litmus test for Albania’s progress. When the delegation arrives, they should skip formalities and head to the water’s edge at dawn. The number of flamingos will tell a story. As long as the flock is there, Albania is on the right track, building the partner the West desires, and doing so independently. The mistake now would be to turn away while the water is still clean.
