Businesses still equate high search rankings with customer discovery, confidence and sales, but recent data shows that visibility alone no longer guarantees those outcomes.

Search behavior shifts in 2026

Research from SparkToro indicates that 68.01% of U.S. Google searches between January and April 2026 ended without a click. Users are getting answers directly on the results page.

A separate analysis by Nozzle found that 39.9% of search-result pages in September 2026 omitted part of the original query. The information presented often diverges from what the user asked.

These trends mean that a business’s presence on a results page does not assure it will be seen by the same user in a later session.

Why visibility no longer equals trust

AI-driven discovery works on probability, adjusting answers based on prompts, personalization and prior searches. A brand that appears in one AI answer may disappear from another.

For small and local firms, this volatility is risky. Reputation built through personal relationships and authentic reviews still drives purchasing decisions more reliably than a fluctuating rank.

Stephen Vernon, Professional Certified Marketer and founder of Base Hit Marketing, notes, “Business owners don’t always understand how these new tools work. But with LLMs, there is a layer of personalization included.”

He warns that judging success from a single prompt or screenshot is misleading. Patterns across multiple platforms and timeframes give a clearer picture.

Vernon recently tested paid awards against genuine media coverage to see how each affected AI visibility. The experiment highlighted that fictitious recognition can appear, but it does not reliably improve how AI systems surface a business.

Low-quality backlinks also pose a danger. A client’s site accumulated spammy links that required a thorough cleanup, illustrating that not every backlink contributes positively to technical health.

In practice, firms that blend genuine customer feedback with solid content tend to appear more often in AI summaries. This approach aligns with a BrightEdge analysis showing 29% of Reddit citations in Google AI overviews were paired with YouTube links, the highest co-citation rate observed.

Building credibility beyond rankings

An integrated strategy links SEO, public relations, credible content and Google Business Profiles. For local enterprises, this coordination creates a consistent narrative across search, maps and social channels.

Authentic reviews are essential. Vernon advises encouraging real customers to leave feedback naturally rather than purchasing ratings.

Gathering insights from sales calls, customer surveys and online discussions helps shape content that addresses actual needs, increasing the likelihood that AI tools cite the business.

Measuring impact responsibly

Because AI results vary, traditional rank-tracking tools can be unreliable. Companies should monitor meaningful outcomes such as clicks, inquiries and revenue rather than isolated position numbers.

Vernon plans a structured test over 30, 60 and 90 days to correlate coverage types with search performance. The goal is to identify which tactics produce consistent visibility.

He also cautions against assuming AI-generated answers are accurate. “Don’t believe everything that you see,” Vernon says. “You need to provide the citations. You need to follow the facts and follow the sources.” Fact-checking remains a critical step.
