There are plenty of benefits to moving into a new build home, as it’s a blank canvas for you to make it your own and add your own twist! However, as they don’t tend to have much character to begin with, it can be difficult to decide where to begin with your decor and design choices, without spending a fortune on everything at once. So, we’re here with 4 different ways to make your new build house feel like a home to get you started, from considering plant hire to get your garden up to scratch through to your finishing touches with soft furnishings.
Don’t Underestimate Paint!
First up, when every wall in the house is likely white, it can really lack warmth and that homely feel. So the best place to start is to decide on a colour scheme for each room and get it feeling more like home. Perhaps you start by changing out the cool white tones for a warmer off-white, then decide on your feature colour for each space. It doesn’t necessarily need to be super bold, it could simply be a darker neutral shade, however it can make a big difference. Or, of course, go big and bold with statement colours!
Add Soft Furnishings
You also need to add soft furnishings to the space to help warm it up. You’ll have your main furniture but then you can really bring it to life with rugs, cushions and throws, so not only is it super comfy when you do sit down, but it can transform the space and help it to look cosy, as well as feel it. If you do choose more neutral colour palettes, this is also a great way to add texture and colour without making drastic changes.
Sort Out Your Mood Lighting
If currently there is only bright white main lighting in your home, you’d be surprised how much of a difference mood lighting can make. Having lamps or other forms of lighting in your rooms, especially things like your living room, bedroom or over the dining area in your kitchen. These things can instantly brighten up a space in a cosy and warm way, you could even choose warm yellow bulbs to make it even better. Don’t forget those finishing touches like candles for cosy nights in.
Focus On The Garden
An area of the house that is often neglected with new builds is the garden. Often a new build home won’t even come with soil or grass, let alone anything else in the form of plants or patios. So, we’d recommend setting aside some budget to sort out your garden, as it can make a world of difference to the overall feel of your home. If you’ve done some landscaping before, perhaps you look at things like dumper hire to do the renovation yourself, or start simple with a lawn and a few potted plants, as even this will make a big difference.
